Incontinence is when a person does not go to the toilet but wets (urinary incontinence) or dirties (faecal) his or her pants.

If incontinence occurs, it is important to check first with the doctor or clinic to find out what the cause of the incontinence might be.

  • The person might have a bladder infection, or it could be caused by the medicine that the person is taking, or even by constipation.
  • In men, an enlarged prostate gland might also cause incontinence.

If it is for one of these reasons, the person can be treated and may get better.

If the person is incontinent because of Alzheimer’s, we will have to consider other ways of dealing with the incontinence.
